International soccer came to Seattle Wednesday night, and let me tell you, it was totally awesome. I love the game of soccer and have played it since I was able to walk. Growing up in a town where there wasn’t a lot to do other than look at the Tulips or go fishing, soccer was a great thing to do year round. The game I played was soccer, but the game that was played Wednesday night between Mexico and China was super duper soccer. The pure ability of these guys was astonishing. I don’t care that neither team brought their true national team; the dudes that played Wednesday night can definitely kick the ball around. They can all jump about five feet in the air, they can all run ridiculously fast, and of course, they can all act hurt with the best of Hollywood. It was a joy to shoot.

The best match up all night was between the huge Chinese sweeper Wu Hao and the fast and aggressive Mexican forward Cesar Villaluz. Hao wasn’t a starter and only entered the game midway in the first half after a teammate went down with what appeared to be badly injured foot. After Hao came in, the fireworks started as they battled back and forth. I’m confident that if Hao hadn’t been such a force in the backfield, Mexico would have scored at least two more goals and won by more than 1-0.

And of course, what soccer game would be complete without jersey tugging and questionable challenges?

Stay tuned, the MLS comes to Seattle in 2009.
