Weekend reading: Lars Ulrich, Madonna and Paul Westerberg

Really, my favorite article this week is the last one, a fun little bit of music criticism praising ugly - well, homely - rock stars.
But before we get there, let's here from a Tom Cruise-sympathizing Madonna and Metallica's Lars Ulrich.
Onward:
Lars Ulrich is against soulless megastores. But what about the soulful ones, Lars? What about those?
Paul Westerberg of the Replacements gives it to Billboard like it is about bonus tracks: “They used to call 'em ‘outtakes,’ you know, ‘not suitable for airplay’ or ‘not suitable for the 'buying' dollar,' and I wanted people to know that everything that's called a "bonus" isn't necessarily for the better.”
Madonna tells New York magazine that Tom Cruise gets a raw deal, "just as I think the orphans in Malawi get a raw deal, just as I think a lot of marginalized people get a raw deal." Unfortunate comparisons there, Madge.
And finally, for the new issue of Esquire, rock critic Andy Langer wrote a nice little piece about homely musicians. I couldn’t find it on Esquire’s actual site, but here it is, courtesy of robnroll.wordpress.com. Just scroll down a little.
