The Orthodox celebration of Easter, or "Pascha," occurs five weeks later this year than in the Roman Catholic and Protestant churches because of a difference in the method of calculating the date. Services are planned at the following Snohomish County churches: St. Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church, 21226 Poplar Way, Brier, 425-771-1916. St. Andrew Antiochian Orthodox Church, 230 E. St. Thomas Antiochian Orthodox Mission, 1309 Bonneville Ave., Snohomish, 360-563-0748. The Orthodox date for Easter is based on a decree of the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. According to this decree, Easter must be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon of the vernal equinox but always after the Jewish Passover to maintain the Biblical sequence of events of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. National Day of Prayer On May 1 communities of faith nationwide will join Dr. Ravi Zacharias, an author, speaker and minister, who will help lead the nation in prayer as the 2008 honorary chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force. This year's theme for the event is "Prayer! America's Strength and Shield" from Psalm 28:7. "The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped." The annual observance takes place the first Thursday of May. Through the efforts of the National Day of Prayer task force, a privately funded organization, more than 35,000 prayer gatherings will be conducted by approximately 40,000 volunteers across the country. Several million people are expected to participate this year. The Everett First Christian Reformed Church invites the public to an open house noon to 8 p.m. May 1 at 1429 McDougall Ave. Prayer requests will be accepted for those who cannot attend the open house. Call 425-252-7317. Stanwood Camano Island area residents will gather for two events. The first is a Youth for Christ sponsored event in Stanwood called SCYPE, Stanwood Camano Youth Prayer Event. Youth from more than a dozen area churches plan to meet 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Christian Family Center, 788 Smith Road, Camano Island. For more information, call 360-629-4067. The second event is set for noon May 1 in Haggen's parking lot at the Stanwood-Camano Village shopping center, 26603 72nd Ave. NW, Stanwood. The observance will begin with the reading of Gov. Chris Gregoire's proclamation of this year's state Day of Prayer. Local clergy will lead prayer for national and local government officials, members of the armed services, the media, businesses, schools, churches and ministries, homes and families. Marysville First Assembly invites the public to an interdenominational prayer rally May 1 to coincide with the 57th annual National Day of Prayer. The rally is set for 1 p.m. at Comford Park, 514 Delta Ave., at the intersection of State Street and Delta Avenue, Marysville. Camps Warm Beach Christian Camps and Conference Center offers a parent and child Horsemanship Camp, May 9 to 11 at the center, 20800 Marine Drive, Stanwood. The weekend camp offers horsemanship instruction, trail rides, arena games and vaulting for kids ages 10 and older and their parents. Celebrations Marysville First Assembly will celebrate the ministry of Dr. Ken Squires and his family beginning at 10 a.m. May 4. Squires is leaving Marysville First Assembly for a new ministry after 16 years at the church. A special service, potluck and celebration is planned in his honor. For more information, call 360-629-3767. concerts Sunday: Cora Voce, a choir comprised of alumni from local university choral schools and others from around the U.S. invites the public to "Expressions of the Heart: Love Songs," a concert at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at North Creek Presbyterian Church, 621 164th St. SE, Mill Creek. Group members range in age from recent college graduates to people in their 60s, including several families in which members of two generations sing in the choir. The group travels across the U.S. three times a year for one week of rehearsals and performances. The cost for Sunday's concert is $15 for general admission, $10 for seniors and students. Sandy Brown, executive director of the Church Council of Greater Seattle, will be the keynote speaker. Other participants include Mona Stucki, an Arlington resident of Palestinian descent; Bill Ellis, a long-time student of the Middle East and Hank Landau, of Landau Associates, an Edmonds engineering firm. The senior high youth group of Marysville's Bethlehem Lutheran Church is hosting an adult golf tournament 11 a.m. May 17 at Dutch Hill Country Club. The youth group's first Tourney for Teens is a three-person team scramble. It kicks off with a shotgun start, and is a fundraiser for the church's youth activities. The course features six holes and a couple of fish ponds on a pastoral setting. The cost is $50 per person and includes greens fees, a bratwurst lunch, a gourmet barbecue chicken dinner and prizes. Edmonds Community Lighthouse meets on the first Monday of every month. Aglow is an international Christian ministry with more than 4,000 local groups in 171 nations. Lynch, a musician and pastor known for his lecture series, "Gospel Music: Blessing or Blight?" is an evangelist who uses traditional sacred music in his ministry.
