In my music column this week, I reviewed new albums from Madonna, Portishead, Dizzee Rascal and the Roots.
Here’s a favorite song of mine from each, so you can judge for yourself.
Madonna, “Hard Candy”
“Incredible” — This song runs about two minutes too long, but starts strong. The mix of piano and Postal Service-styled synthesizer flourishes works well.
Portishead, “Third”
“Silence” — I just can’t get into these guys. I thought about putting a link to my favorite song from the disc, “Deep Water,” but it’s entirely non-representative of their sound. So here’s the lead song, more in tune with the album, their first studio record in 11 years.
Dizzee Rascal, “Maths + English”
“Wanna Be,” featuring Lily Allen — This song samples the track “So You Want to Be a Boxer,” from the kid-starring musical “Bugsy Malone.” It’s a fun pop song. And I like the way Dizzee converts each “th” into a “f,” turning thing into fing. “Tell me just one fing.” OK!
The Roots, “Rising Down”
“Criminal,” featuring Chrisette Michelle & Wale — All the splash cymbals and the solid female back-up vocals help sell this song for me.
