The opportunity came, interestingly enough, when another Herald "first" was in progress -- the start of groundbreaking for the new home of the newspaper. The "natural color" engraving showed equipment beginning excavation for the new structure on California Street between Grand and Norton avenues. The Jefferson PTA met in the school music room to hear the Rev. Eugene Strinden of Zion Lutheran Church speak on religion in the home and the school. David Ross, student at Throlakson's Accordion School, played several numbers, and Lillian Albrecht's fourth-graders offered flutophone numbers. Refreshments were served by mothers of fifth-grade students. 25 years ago (1983) It was time to sign up for the Seventh Annual Everett Bed Race to be held downtown on June 11. Winners would be invited to the regional bed race at the Kingdome in Seattle. The event benefited the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Tech. Sgt. Willis M. Freberg of Stanwood was decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal while serving as a communications equipment technician at Hilo, Hawaii.
