Electronic security for your dog door

What:
Your doggy door swings open and you smile: Rex is back from doing his business! You glance down, ready to pet your pooch, when you realize it's not Rex at all -- it's another darn raccoon. As you reach for the broom, you think to yourself, "If only there were a way to keep these pesky varmints outside." That's where the Plexidor electronic pet door enters the picture.

Advantages:
Pet Doors USA sells a number of automated dog doors designed to let pets back inside while keeping pests outdoors; the Plexidor is the latest. The Plexidor opens as the pet approaches, thanks to a small, lightweight key card that attaches to a pet's collar. Waterproof -- slobber-proof, really -- and shock-proof, the key card requires no batteries. The door slides up like a garage so it can't blow open. The company includes installation and a five-year warranty in the price of the door.

Limitations:
Speaking of price: The doors are expensive, starting at $697; nonelectronic pet doors from the company start about $20. Also, while the key cards don't require batteries, the electronic door needs to be plugged into the wall.

Where:
To order, call 800-749-9609.

Learn more:
Check www.dogdoors.com or www.plexidor.com for more information.

Cost:
$697 to $790, depending on size and model
