The recycling event, organized by WSU Beach Watchers and WSU Waste Wise Program, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Signs pointing out the event are posted at the intersection of Can Ku Road and N. East Camano Drive. A single tire, holding a puddle of water, can hold enough larvae to hatch 25,000 mosquitoes each year, said Scott Chase of Shore Stewards of Island County, who assisted in setting up the recycling event. Tires are sometimes left outside in piles, or illegally dumped on rural land, he said. "We've had people up in arms about that," Chase said. "It's quite sad that somebody would use (someone else's) property as a dumping ground." Only tires from cars and light trucks will be accepted at Saturday's event. The cost is $2.25 for tires off rims and $4 for tires on rims. The cost of recycling tires at the Camano Island Transfer Station is usually around $7.50 per tire. The tires should be clean and not filled with dirt or other debris. People must call ahead if planning to bring more than 100 tires. The event is open to both Snohomish and Island county residents. In recent years, people have brought in 600 to 800 tires to the Camano Island event, Chase said. "It helps people clean up their yards and eliminate code violations," he said.
