Free to people in need: furniture from 44 hotel rooms

The Farm Ministries in Snohomish will give away donated oak pieces this weekend.

SNOHOMISH -- A second life is planned for the oak tables, TV centers and chairs that made the Best Western in Lynnwood a home-away-from-home for travelers.

The hotel no longer needed 44 rooms worth of furniture and called up Bruce Karr of The Farm Ministries in Snohomish to help deliver the goods to people who need them most.

Low-income housing organizations and homeless shelters in Snohomish County and the region got first pick of the furniture. Housing Hope needed -- and took -- all of the chairs for its clients.

Karr couldn't find takers for all the hundreds of pieces of furniture.

Karr still has end tables, coffee tables, TV centers and small kitchen tables.

He is opening his doors today and Sunday for people who might need some furniture.

"We're giving them to needy people," said Karr, founder of the Christian charity that helps troubled teens perform community service.

"All people have to say is they don't have the money, and we'd give it to them free," Karr said. "My first choice is to help the needy, but if folks can help us, that would be great, too."

His property is a mishmash of brightly painted sheds and outbuildings on the Pilchuck River that serve as the base for his youth outreach work.

Best Western has sent Karr used linens in the past for people living in shelters and low-­income housing.

Any donations given to the charity for the furniture will be split with volunteers, Karr said.
