Lakewood prevails in shootout

LAKEWOOD -- The Lakewood boys soccer team relied on experienced goalkeeper Peter Karrenberg to defeat the Lynden Lions 2-1 in a 2A Northwest District 1 shootout victory Saturday at Lakewood Stadium.

After both teams first four players scored their penalty kicks in the shootout, Karrenberg came through in the clutch.

Karrenberg, who only played goalkeeper for the two overtime periods, rejected Lynden's fifth and final shooter, punching the shot 25 yards to the left. Karrenberg's block set up fellow senior captain Eric Hawks' game-winning penalty kick.

"He is pretty solid in P.K. situations," Lakewood coach Vaughn Vandelac said. "We practice taking penalty kicks in practice and he seems to get his hands on quite a few."

Karrenberg is Lakewood's usual goalie, but he played forward during regulation time, moving back to the goalie spot for the two overtimes and shootout.

Lakewood advances to play Sultan at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Vernon High School.

"It is only going to get harder from here on out," Vandelac said to his team after the game.

The Cougars looked poised to run away with the game after Evander Ochoa made his 19th goal of the season 1 minute, 7 seconds into the game.

Lakewood midfielder Brian Star gathered in the ball at Lynden's 40 yard line and passed it through the Lions defense to a running Ochoa. After dribbling the ball four times, Ochoa slid the ball past Lynden goalkeeper Eric Kodama to put the Cougars ahead 1-0.

After scoring the goal, Lakewood's intensity seemed to fade as both teams were held scoreless until the Lions scored an opportune goal in the 75th minute to tie the score 1-1.

Lakewood's defense and goalkeeper James Hoback were caught out of position. Lynden sent a ball over the Cougars defense. Hoback, who was making his first start of the season in goal, ran 18 yards to the right of the goal but was beaten to the ball by the Lions Sebastian Kent. Kent took one dribble and passed to a wide-open Matt Hicks, who scored on the open net to send the game into two scoreless overtime periods.

"We know we have to play our game and keep up the pressure," Vandelac said. "We have lost our focus a little bit in games and that's when the other team seems to score."

Lakewood almost avoided the overtime period in the 79th minute off a corner kick. Ochoa gathered a loose ball and hit a shot headed for the left corner of the goal past a diving Kodama. But Kent saved the shot while guarding the inside of the left goalpost and cleared it out of danger to preserve the tie.

Lakewood's Craig Hooks, Star, Andrew Priest, Ochoa and Hawks all converted on their penalty kicks in the shootout.

Lakewood has made it to the 2A state tournament five straight years with its best finish a fourth place in 2003.
