Contest puts deserved attention on moms

In kid's hearts, Mom is still the best.

Fourth-graders from Snohomish and Everett entered an Everett Elks Mothers Day essay contest and wrote about why they love their mothers. Here are samples from some of the entries from Monroe School District's Chain Lake Elementary School in Snohomish and Emerson Elementary School in Everett:

"My mom is one of the smartest people in the world, but sometimes she uses the Internet. Even though she is smart, I still love her." Julian Toms, Mom is Susan Vaniver (Chain Lake).

"My Mom is really cool. She can do lots of things. Grounding me for being rotten is definitely one of the things she is good at. I hope she lives for a long time. Like until she's 80." Cody Harris, Mom is Cherie Harris (Chain Lake).

"We move a lot because my Dad is in the Navy. She has to be both Mom and Dad." Conor Lawler, Mom is Grace Kelly (Emerson).

"Have you ever been loved so much you feel like you are going to pop? That's how my Mom is to me." Aly Hill, Mom is Dianna Evrin (Emerson).

"I call her Plum, because she's sweet on the inside, sour on the outside." Courtney Grapp, Mom is Tina Grapp (Chain Lake).

"When I need her, she is always there for me, unless she goes exercising." Teanen Chen, Mom is Michelle Chaing (Chain Lake).

"My mom really wants a goat." Amanda Guptill, Mom is Lori Guptill (Chain Lake).

"She is funny, strong, beautiful, fun and can sometimes get pretty freaky about food. Really. I mean it. She plans our meals two weeks before we eat them. She is able to tell what we're doing without looking at us." Madison Armitage, Mom is Connie Armitage (Chain Lake).

"My mom is more than just Mom, she is a great listener, and above all, stands up to even the toughest bullies." Hanna Andersen, Mom is Kim Andersen (Emerson).

"She's the best mom in the galaxy." Jonathan Kyle, Mom is Naomi Kyle (Chain Lake).

Jenaea Bush of Everett won a PEMCO Insurance Super-Long Coffee Order promotion with Tully's Coffee. She won a $100 Tully's gift card and gift bag.

Her entry: Veinte cup of ice with soy poured over it until the bottom of the "U," then filled to almost the top of the cup with chai, then add 1 1/4 tsp. white chocolate and six pumps vanilla. Stir, then add two ristretto shots on top. Stir again and serve.

Fun fact: Deb Loughrey- Johnson, who lives in Everett, only likes to eat the heel on a loaf of bread. She doesn't like end pieces of cake because that is too much frosting.

She is the executive director for Grandview Village retirement community in Marysville.

Her two favorite drinks are root beer and dirty martinis.
