Stanwood beats Snohomish to clinch district playoff berth

STANWOOD -- In a gaffe-filled affair, the Stanwood softball team got the big hit when it counted.

The Spartans, trailing by a run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, rallied to defeat Snohomish 4-3 Monday to clinch a berth in the 4A District 1 playoffs.

Stanwood improved to 10-5 in the Wesco North Division and 12-5 overall. Snohomish is now 4-8 and 8-8.

The game was marred with 10 errors between the two teams, seven of which were committed by the Spartans.

"It wasn't pretty, but we'll take the win," said Stanwood coach Cherlyn Schander.

With two outs and runners at second and third in the seventh, Stanwood's Tori Kriegel hit a line drive that went off the Snohomish third baseman's glove and into foul territory allowing both runners to score and ending the game.

Kriegel finished 2-for-4, while teammate Jordan Nemo was also 2-for-4 with a double.

The Spartans finish the regular season against Everett at 6 p.m. today at Lincoln Field.

Archbishop Murphy 6, South Whidbey 0: At Everett, Brittany Allen of Archbishop Murphy pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 14 batters and walking one. Catcher Marya Oestreich was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two doubles and teammate Nicole Melseth was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs.

Granite Falls 10-12, Sultan 0-1: At Sultan, Alyssa Arndt and Sarah Hensley of Granite Falls set the tone by pitching a no-hitter in the first game of the Cascade Conference doubleheader. In game two, Hensley was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and two runs. Cassidy Pedersen of Granite Falls was 4-for-5 on the day with an RBI and two runs and teammate Cacia Stevens ended the day 3-for-5 with two runs.
