Zumiez Inc. shows hike in April sales

Zumiez Inc., the Everett-based seller of action sports clothing and gear, said sales during April rose to $24 million, or 20 percent above the same month last year. Much of that increase came from Zumiez's new locations. Same-store sales, which compares results at locations open more than a year, increased 4 percent. Trevor Lang, Zumiez's chief financial officer, said footwear and skateboard-related gear were among the month's big sellers at the chain's 306 stores.

Bothell biotech tackles eye disease

Acucela Inc., a Bothell biotechnology company focused on eye disease therapies, has filed an application to start a phase 1 clinical trial for its lead compound. The potential drug candidate, ACU-02, is a small molecule modulator of the visual cycle, which is thought to play a key role in the formation of age-related macular degeneration.

Investor Kerkorian buys stake in Ford

Ford's most prominent new shareholder is not expected at the automaker's annual meeting Thursday, but his formidable presence will be felt. Ford Motor Co. executives are to brief shareholders in Wilmington, Del., on the company's progress more than a week after billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian disclosed that he had acquired a 4.7 percent stake in the car company. Kerkorian's Tracinda Corp. has said it hopes to amass a 5.6 percent ownership in Ford, expressing confidence in Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally's efforts to restore the automaker to profitability by 2009.

Port celebrates Craftsmen District

The Port of Everett celebrates its new Craftsmen District with an open house today at 11 a.m. at the 12th Street Yacht basin. The district, adjacent to a new state-of-the-art marina, is the first part of a $400 million redevelopment project that is slated to eventually have 660 condominiums, office space, restaurants, lodging and public spaces.

Korea airline orders 777-200s

Asiana Airlines has ordered two extended range 777-200s. The order for the Everett-assembled aircraft is valued at $438 million at list prices, although prices are negotiable. The South Korean airline holds rights to substitute the larger 777-300ER, which features increased payload and range capability, if needed. Asiana, in South Korea, operates 40 Boeing airplanes, including nine other 777s.
