Camano Island Backyard Wildlife Garden Tour set for June 7

Get wild in the garden: There's a new event this year for fans of gardening with wildlife. It's the Camano Island Backyard Wildlife Garden Tour, a free, self-guided tour featuring gardens large and small, simple and extravagant, forested and waterfront, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 7. Pick up maps at Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road, Camano Island or call 360-387-1615 with questions.



Great Garden Award: If you're a Mill Creek resident and you'd like to receive a special award for turning your front yard into a beautiful place, now is the time to get to work.

Members of the city of Mill Creek's arts and beautification board will randomly tour different areas of the city Wednesday through July 9 with most tours happening in June.

In July, 12 residents who have put exceptional time and effort into their properties, will be awarded a Great Garden Award. Each will receive a commemorative keepsake, a sign placed in their yard for the month of August and the honor of having their names placed on a perpetual plaque in the City Hall lobby. Nominations will not be accepted.

Recycle those wine corks: If you drink even a modest amount of wine every year, it's easy to end up with a pile of corks. What to do?

Yes, they work great when chipped a bit and turned into garden mulch, but you need quite a few corks to do that. Yes, you can make a trivet or bulletin board.

You can also, however, simply recycle corks by mailing them -- they're light, after all -- to Yemm and Hart Green Materials of Marquand, Mo., where they will be turned them into cork tiles.
