PREP ROUNDUP: Great defense helps Snohomish eliminate Monroe

EVERETT -- Again and again Monroe loaded the bases.

And again and again the Bearcats had trouble scoring.

Monroe loaded the bases three times in the first four innings -- scoring just one run -- against Snohomish in a loser-out Class 4A District 1 baseball playoff game on Wednesday at Everett Memorial Stadium.

Snohomish took advantage of the Bearcats' missed opportunities, defeating Monroe 7-2.

Snohomish will play Edmonds-Woodway at 11 a.m. Saturday at Everett Memorial Stadium for the right to move on to state.

"Incredible defensive night," Snohomish head coach Kim Hammons said of the Panthers.

Snohomish right fielder Austin Reynolds made the play of the game in the fourth inning. Monroe had the bases loaded when Reynolds made a diving catch on a ball hit to deep right center. A run scored on the sacrifice fly.

"Just a great play," Hammons said of Reynolds' catch. "He went horizontal."

Snohomish loaded the bases in the second inning and scored five runs -- the first two on a double from Devin Ford.

Snohomish's Derek Jones hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.

"It was a massive bomb," Hammons said. "He hit it into I-5."

Edmonds-Woodway 7, Shorewood:4 At Everett, Edmonds-Woodway scored all seven of its runs in the fourth inning en route to victory in the loser-out 4A District 1 playoff.

Shorecrest 6, Mount Vernon 0: At Mount Vernon, Josh Leupold and Kevin Rechkoff were a combined 5-for-5 at the plate and James Robbins hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to help Shorecrest win a 3A District 1 loser-out game. The Scots face Ferndale on Saturday.

Coupeville 4, Vashon Island 2: At Coupeville, the victory earned Coupeville a berth in the Class 1A state tournament. James Smith hit a two-run single and Alex Evans had an RBI single in Coupleville's four-run fifth inning. Evans pitched two shutout innings to earn the save.
