Book-It Repertory Theatre selects its 2008-09 adaptations

From a trip through a modern-day counterculture tale to the classic about a whale, Book-It Repertory Theatre's 2008-09 season is offering quite a range of stage adaptations of literary works and even adding a bit more in its 19th season.

The theater returns to its traditional five-play schedule. The first four plays will be produced in Center House Theatre at Seattle Center, with the fifth work performed at the Moore Theatre in Seattle.

The theater's season will open with Tom Robbins' 1976 counterculture hit "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues," followed by Willa Cather's reminiscence of turn-of-the-20th-century pioneer life in Nebraska, "My Ántonia." Next up is Herman Melville's classic battle of man vs. mammal in "Moby-Dick," or "The Whale," which plays in the winter, followed by Dinaw Mengestu's debut novel about contemporary immigrant experience in Washington, D.C. called "The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears," which plays in spring. The season closes in June 2009 with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's early-aviation tale of pioneering pilots in Argentina, "Night Flight."

Also, Book-It All Over!, the educational arm of the company, presents its new season of stories that will tour schools, libraries and community centers throughout the state. The Book-It All Over! program includes the "banned books" series, "Danger! Books," which addresses First Amendment issues.

The details of Book-It's season follows. All performances are at Book-It Repertory Theatre, 305 Harrison St., Seattle, unless otherwise noted:

"Even Cowgirls Get the Blues": by Tom Robbins, Sept. 16 through Oct. 12.

"My Ántonia": by Willa Cather, Nov. 25 through Dec. 21.

"Moby Dick" or "The Whale": by Herman Melville, Feb. 10 through March 8.

"The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears": by Dinaw Mengestu, April 14 through May 9.

"Night Flight": by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, June 3 through 14, 2009, Moore Theatre.

Book-It All Over!:

"La Mariposa": by Francisco Jiménez. Tours September through December, for grades K-8.

"Chicken Sunday": by Patricia Polacco. Tours January through April for grades K-8.

"The Jungle Books": by Rudyard Kipling. Tours February through June for grades K-6.

"Danger! Books": (books to be announced). Tours September through November.

Book-It season subscriptions range from $72 to $180; single tickets will be available beginning in August. Call 206-216-0833.
