Our Towns: Around the county

Lake Stevens

City contributes to community groups

The city of Lake Stevens recently awarded $10,000 to several non-profit groups in the community.

The city gave $4,000 to the Lake Stevens Family Center, $2,500 to the Lake Stevens Community Food Bank, $2,000 to Sherwood Community Services, $1,000 to the Lake Stevens Senior Center and $500 to Housing Hope of Everett for its Avanti House program.

Mukilteo

City streets to be chip sealed this summer

Several streets in the area of Chennault Beach Road west of Harbour Pointe Boulevard are planned to be chip sealed this summer.

The project, scheduled to be done by the end of September, is expected to cost the city about $175,000.

The city had planned on repaving a section of Harbour Pointe Boulevard, and also 47th Avenue and 107th Street SW, but sub-surface testing showed the streets were in too poor of condition to be overlaid. They will have to be rebuilt, according to Mukilteo Public Works officials.

Harbour Heights Parkway was restored last year using the chip-seal method.

Snohomish County

Fire Marshal urges awareness of arson

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal is asking people to keep an eye out for intentionally set fires during National Arson Awareness Week, which continues through Saturday. Tom Maloney said there has been an increase in arson-related blazes in the county this year.

Residential and vehicle arson are among the top five causes of blazes in the county, he said.

It's important to discuss fire danger with children and to call 911 if there is suspicious activity, he said.

County Council: No $20 car tab increase

The Snohomish County Council says it won't boost car tab fees by $20 for major road projects.

The state Legislature gave the county the power to adopt the fee countywide by May 22 without asking voters.

Cities lobbied for the fee to be funneled to city road construction projects.

Mountlake Terrace: Free trash pickup planned for city

Get rid of additional garbage from spring cleaning during a free day of trash pickup planned by the city of Mountlake Terrace.

All trash eligible to be collected during the event should be placed along curbs outside of homes after 5 p.m. Tuesday and before 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Materials eligible to be picked up include items less than 3 feet, 6 inches in length and weighing no more than 50 pounds. Items can be bagged, boxed or bundled. Up to 65 pounds of yard debris can be disposed of in paper yard waste bags, 32-gallon cans with handles and lids or bundles tied with sisal twine.

If you want to have appliances picked up, special stickers are being sold at Mountlake Terrace City Hall at 23204 56th Ave. W. The stickers, which must be placed on appliances for them to be picked up, cost $22 for appliances with chlorinated fluorocarbons such as refrigerators and air conditioners. For appliances without chlorinated fluorocarbons, such as washers, dryers and water tanks, the cost is $17.

Electronics, hazardous waste, tires, bicycles, concrete, rocks, soil, tree stumps, furniture, toilets, lawn mowers and other items will not be picked up.

Most items that don't meet pick-up requirements can be dropped off at the local transfer station at 21311 61st Place W.

Call the transfer station at 425-388-3425 for information on fees.
