NL NOTES: Braves' Acosta loses save

BRAVES: Manny Acosta lost a save Thursday when an official scorer realized he mistakenly awarded one the previous night following the Atlanta Braves' 5-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

Acosta, the Braves' fill-in closer with Rafael Soriano on the disabled list, entered with a 5-2 lead Wednesday after Will Ohman got the first out of the ninth inning. Acosta retired Callix Crabbe and Khalil Greene to end the game.

Braves official scorer Jack Wilkinson awarded Acosta his third save, and the save was included on the box score and postgame report.

The save was removed following a review by the commissioner's office and the Elias Sports Bureau, baseball's statistician. To qualify for the save, Acosta would have had to start the inning with a three-run lead or enter the game with the potential tying run on base, at the plate or on deck.

Atlanta reliever Peter Moylan will miss the rest of the season after having elbow-ligament replacement surgery Thursday.

Dr. James Andrews operated on Moylan's right elbow in Birmingham, Ala., after finding a bone spur had broken off and compromised the ligament, Braves spokesman Brad Hainje said.

The Braves activated infielder Omar Infante from the disabled list to start on Thursday and placed catcher Brayan Pena on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained back.

PIRATES: Pittsburgh acquired outfielder Jason Michaels and cash from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday for a player to be named.

NATIONALS: Washington catcher Paul Lo Duca will be placed on the 15-day disabled list today with a broken right hand. Lo Duca broke the fourth metacarpal bone in his hand while batting in the seventh inning against Houston on Wednesday night. He just came off the DL last Friday after he was hit by a pitch and bruised the same hand on April 13. Nationals manager Manny Acta said Lo Duca could be out four to six weeks.

PHILLIES: Reigning NL MVP Jimmy Rollins was to rejoin Philadelphia today in San Francisco after missing a month with a sprained left ankle. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he will watch Rollins warm up and could put his star shortstop back in the lineup immediately.

DIAMONDBACKS: Arizona left-hander Doug Davis said he has been pronounced cancer free after a sophisticated test showed no spread of the disease.

Davis said he got the news from surgeon Dr. Bob Evani, who removed the pitcher's cancerous thyroid gland on April 10.

He underwent a "nuclear CT scan," which would detect any spread of the disease.

The cancer was discovered before the season began but Davis had two starts before undergoing the surgery. He allowed two runs in six innings in a 10-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers two days before the surgery.

He is to have another CT scan in six months.

PADRES: San Diego placed right-handed pitcher Kevin Cameron on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow sprain and purchased the contract of left-hander Shawn Estes from Class AAA Portland.
