AL NOTES: A's option Braden

A'S: Oakland optioned left-hander Dallas Braden to Class AAA Sacramento on Thursday. Braden was 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA in five relief appearances with the A's after being recalled from the minors on April 22.

ORIOLES: Baltimore has a new shortstop. Manager Dave Trembley said Freddie Bynum, activated Thursday from the 15-day disabled list, would replace Luis Hernandez. Infielder Eider Torres was optioned to Class AAA Norfolk to make room on the roster. "Right now, Bynum is the starting shortstop on this team," Trembley said before the Orioles opened a four-game series in Kansas City. "What that means is he will be the regular guy that plays."

TWINS: Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire rejoined the team on Thursday after missing the past five games to be with his family in Oklahoma following the death of his brother. Gardenhire said he was still trying to cope with the loss of 54-year-old Mike Gardenhire. "I'm still kind of numb," he said before Minnesota's game against the Chicago White Sox. It's just all kind of surreal right now. I'm just trying to figure out what I need to do to get back into this thing."

BLUE JAYS: Toronto placed shortstops David Eckstein and John McDonald on the 15-day disabled list, two days after both were injured in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. Eckstein suffered a strained right hip flexor diving for a ball in Tuesday's 5-4 loss. McDonald came on to replace Eckstein, but sprained his right ankle one inning later, catching a cleat and rolling over on his ankle as he went down to backhand a grounder. McDonald immediately clutched his lower leg and had to be carted off the field. He left the stadium on crutches, but is now walking without them.
