NL notes: Edmonds released by Padres
Associated Press
SAN DIEGO -- Jim Edmonds' batting average had fallen to .178 -- more than 100 points below his lifetime mark -- and he clearly had lost a step or two while chasing fly balls in center field for the San Diego Padres.
The 37-year-old Edmonds was released on Friday, a move that will cost the Padres approximately $4.7 million.
The Padres viewed Edmonds as a one-year stopgap in center field and he didn't even last six weeks.
"If we would have been 10-11 games over .500, we might have been able to ride this thing out a little bit longer and wait for him to hopefully better his numbers," general manager Kevin Towers.
The Padres went into Friday night's game against Colorado with a 12-23 (.343) record. Even with Arizona's 3-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs, the Padres were 101/2 games back.
An eight-time Gold Glove winner and four-time All-Star, Edmonds strained his right calf in a spring game on March 6 and started the season on the disabled list before being activated on April 5. A lifetime .286 hitter, he was just 16-for-90 in 26 games, with one home run and six RBI.
While Edmonds once made spectacular catches while with the Cardinals and Angels, he simply couldn't catch up to fly balls or had them hit over his head.
Edmonds' salary this year is $8 million. The Padres got $2 million from the Cardinals when they acquired Edmonds on Dec. 15 for minor league third baseman David Freese.
The Padres called up outfielder Jody Gerut from Class AAA Portland and he started in center Friday night. Gerut, on San Diego's opening day roster, hit .308 with five home runs and 18 RBI in 27 games with the Beavers.
REDS-METS: The scheduled game between the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets was postponed because of rain Friday night. It will be made up today as part of a day-night doubleheader, with start times of 10:10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Johan Santana is slated to pitch the opener for New York against Matt Belisle, with Mike Pelfrey getting the ball in Game 2 against Reds right-hander Bronson Arroyo.
Belisle and Pelfrey had been the scheduled starters Friday.
BREWERS: Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo confirmed Friday that he'll have surgery on the torn ligament in his right knee, likely ending his season. Gallardo said he believes there's no chance he could avoid the operation on his anterior cruciate ligament, and that it would occur sometime next week.
Meanwhile, former All-Star closer Derrick Turnbow accepted a minor league assignment from the Brewers and will report to Class AAA Nashville on Monday. Milwaukee designated the 30-year-old right-hander for assignment last week, and the Brewers couldn't work out a deal to trade him over the last week. The club remains responsible for the rest of his $3.2 million salary.
CARDINALS: St. Louis third baseman Troy Glaus left Friday night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers with a bruised left triceps after the Cardinals batted in the third inning. Glaus was hit by Manny Parra's 0-2 fastball to lead off the second inning, but remained in the game.
CUBS: The Chicago Cubs activated left-handed reliever Scott Eyre from the 15-day disabled list Friday and optioned left-handed pitcher Sean Marshall to Class AAA Iowa. Eyre, who missed the first 34 games this season with left elbow inflammation, was placed on the DL on March 30. He made seven minor league rehab appearances with three of the Cubs' minor league affiliates and had a 6.75 ERA.
Marshall, called up from Iowa on April 9, was 0-0 with a save and 4.15 ERA in 13 relief appearances. He was 7-8 and made 19 starts for the Cubs last season. He will go back to the minors and work on returning to a starter's role.
GIANTS: San Francisco shortstop Omar Vizquel is pain-free and ready to finally get back to playing the sparkling defense that has made him an 11-time Gold Glover.
The 41-year-old Vizquel is set to make his season debut for the Giants on Saturday in the middle game against the Philadelphia Phillies, kicking off his 20th major league season. He has been sidelined all season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Feb. 27.
He played in five rehab games without problems, but said he will continue to wear a special adjustable brace on his knee for about a month as a precaution.
PHILLIES: Jimmy Rollins came off the disabled list Friday and the NL MVP was in the Philadelphia lineup batting leadoff and playing shortstop in the series opener against the San Francisco Giants. The 29-year-old Rollins went on the disabled list for the first time in his nine-year big league career on April 20, 12 days after he sprained his left ankle against the Mets. Rollins tested his tender ankle by playing in three rehab games earlier in the week before being activated.
REDS: Ken Griffey Jr. was removed from the Cincinnati Reds' starting lineup Friday night against the New York Mets because of an illness.
Also, reliever Kent Mercker was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday by the Reds because of lower back pain. The move was made retroactive to Tuesday, before the start of its series at the New York Mets.
