Man in custody after Edmonds ferry evacuation

EDMONDS -- A state ferry was evacuated in Edmonds on Saturday after a commuter overheard another man joking about having a bomb on board, according to Edmonds police.

The ferry Spokane was evacuated about 11 a.m. Saturday while Washington State Patrol bomb detection teams searched the boat for explosives. None were found, Edmonds police Sgt. Don Anderson said.

The ferry resumed service about 11:45 a.m. that morning.

A 30-year-old Seattle man who reportedly made the comment about having a bomb was taken into police custody on outstanding warrants. The man told police his comment was made in jest, Anderson said.

The man was overheard by a commuter, who then alerted an Edmonds police officer who was working off-duty at the Edmonds ferry terminal.

The State Patrol is considering criminal charges against the man in connection to the ferry incident.
