Martinez, Solwold and Carpenter win at Skagit Speedway

ALGER -- Barry Martinez beat the weather and a stout field of 410 Sprint Cars at Skagit Speedway on round two of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series.

With imminent weather, Martinez beat pole sitter Nick Engberg into turn one and withstood challenges from Travis Rutz and Jason Solwold in heavy traffic to win his first main event of 2008. Martinez weaved his way through half the field of cars by the time Cameron Smith brought out the evening-ending yellow on lap 13.

Officials determined the track unsafe to race on at that point and called an end to the night's races. Rutz was fast time. Heat race wins went to Aaron Fell, Steve Kilcup and Seth Bergman.

Jason Solwold won his first main event of 2008 in the Budweiser 360 division. Solwold ran down Danielle Huson in lapped traffic, waiting for his opportunity. He found it on lap 20 when Huson came upon Alan Munn and chose to try and pass him low. Solwold went to the high side entering turn three, then powered around Huson who had to check up to get underneath Munn. Brian Kirkpatrick was quick time. Solwold, Brock Lemley and Munn won the heats.

Kelsey Carpenter was a repeat winner in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints. Carpenter was scheduled to start inside row two on the main, but an accident on the initial start involving pole sitter Kelleigh Johnson and Glen Reinstra ended up with Johnson on his top. Carpenter took the pole position and led all 20 laps for his second win in a row. Devin Madonia finished second. Madonia and Carpenter were the heat race winners.

The Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornet feature was cancelled due to weather. Heats were won by Ben Gunderson and Tyler Ketchum. Skagit Speedway officials will decide during the week how and when to make up the missed Outlaw Hornet main.

Industrial Resources Inc. presents the John Carroll Classic next Saturday night at Skagit Speedway. All four classes will be in action. Opening ceremonies are slated for 7pm. Tickets are now on sale for the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup, June 19-20-21 at Skagit Speedway. For ticket information call 360.724.3567 or visit www.skagitspeedway.com
