Making his first postseason appearance of the season, Hargrave pitched the final two innings Saturday, shutting down the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors and leading Snohomish to a 6-4 win in a third-place 4A District 1 playoff game at Everett Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Panthers (19-5 overall) clinched their third straight state tournament berth and will play at 10 a.m. Saturday at Everett Memorial Stadium against an opponent to be determined in the regionals. Snohomish placed second in last year's 4A state tournament. "It's a tough row to hoe. I would rather not travel this road," Snohomish head coach Kim Hammons said referring to earning the 4A District's final state berth by going through the consolation bracket. "I would rather win two and be in, but this road gives the guys a little more experience by playing four games in one week," Hammons said. The Warriors (13-11) were trying to earn their second straight 4A state berth by winning their third game in five days. The two teams faced each other Monday in first round action with the Panthers winning 13-0. Hargrave, a senior pitcher who was out of action this week because of an inner-ear infection, picked up the save by striking out three and allowing just two hits and one run -- unearned. "It was key having Hargrave healthy. We rely on him. He came in and he was the difference," Snohomish head coach Kim Hammons said. "This was my first outing in a week -- first anything in a week," Hargrave said of his appearance. Hargrave escaped a slight scare in the sixth, when a run scored on back-to-back Snohomish throwing errors. In the seventh, the right-hander allowed two Warrior runners to get on base before getting Tyler Lange to groundout to third baseman Braden Allen for the final out of the game. Asked if he was worried about having the go-ahead run at the plate Hargrave replied, "Nah, if I can't shut them down, then my defense can." Snohomish jumped on the board with two runs in the first inning. Edmonds-Woodway cut Snohomish's lead to 2-1 in the third when first baseman Joel Beattinger led off the inning with a solo home run to right. Two outs later, second baseman Adam Hutt scored on a Kramer Scott single to right that was misplayed by Snohomish right fielder Austin Reynolds, tying the score at 2-2. After Snohomish starter Aaron West struck out Warriors' catcher Taylor Cox to end the inning a dejected Reynolds walked off the field hoping for a shot at redemption. The right fielder, who had saved the day Wednesday with a diving catch and the bases loaded in Snohomish's victory over Monroe, did redeem himself in the fourth when his double drove in Cam Woolsey from second giving Snohomish a 3-2 lead. "That was my goal after making that error. I wanted the chance to hit the next run in and I got a chance to do that," Reynolds said. The Warriors had a chance to pull ahead in the fourth when they loaded the bases with one out but West was able to avoid damage by getting Ryan Hansen to ground into an inning-ending double play. "I feel a little bit like Houdini by getting out of so many bases-loaded jams," Hammons said referencing the contest versus Monroe when the Panthers escaped three bases-loaded jams by the Bearcats.
