Sometimes farmed is best. Other times it's wild fish that will earn you the most ecological brownie points. Then, of course, you have a choice between imported and exported. Fortunately, there's a handy pocket guide on buying environmentally friendly seafood, thanks to the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch program. Go to www.mbayaq.org/cr/seafoodwatch.asp and select the West Coast guide, updated for 2008. It folds down to the size of a credit card for easy wallet storage. Each guide offers "best choices," "good alternatives" and "avoid," based not only on the type fishing practices and their environmental effects but also health concerns such as mercury contamination. Now, that's easy.
