PREP ROUNDUP: Everett takes team title at the District 1 boys golf tournament

EVERETT -- All six Everett golfers competing in the first round of the Class 3A District One golf tournament Monday at Legion Memorial Golf Course made the cut and the Seagulls won the overall team title after the first day of the two-day event by 14 strokes.

The Seagulls' team total 393 was enough to beat second-place Mount Vernon's 407. Everett held four of the top 10 positions in the standings after the first day of the tournament.

"They played so well, especially the bottom kids (Everett's 4, 5 and 6 golfers)," Everett coach Darrell Olson said. "They saved their best for last."

Olson said the key to the strong showing in Day 1 was course management and smart play.

"Bottom line is to just not make too many mistakes and if you're going to make them, make them small ones," Olson said.

Brian Olaughlin of Mt. Vernon and Matt Rawitzer of Squalicum tied for medalist honors with both shooting even par 72. Olaughlin and the rest of the Mt. Vernon field also survived the cut.

University of Washington-bound Jens Bracht of Shorecrest followed the medalists with a 74. Every golfer in the top 10 shot under 80.

The individual top ten golfers qualify for state.
