What's Brewin'?

Posted at 12:01 am

Some quick points:

A few days after Eric Gagne backed his way out of the closer role in Milwaukee, it looks like the Brewers may be in even more trouble.

Guillermo Mota got one out to pick up a save on Monday, but then blew up on Wednesday night. Mota entered Wednesday night’s game against the Dodgers with the Brewers up 4-3. Mota got the first out, but then walked Delwyn Young and things fell apart. Mota ended up giving up three runs to blow his first save. It’s safe to stay away from all Brewers relievers for a while until this situation cools off.

In his first game of the season, Angels starter John Lackey surrendered six hits and only one run in seven innings of work against the White Sox on Wednesday night. Lackey threw 93 pitches (64 strikes) and retired 14 out of 15 batters at one point, and he looked strong doing it. Pick him up immediately if no one in your league had the foresight to pick him up.

Here’s some hot bats (over the past week):

Marlins 2B Dan Uggla with five HRs and 10 RBI

Royals OF Jose Guillen has five doubles and is batting .556

Marlins OF Jeremy Hermida is hitting .345 and has scored eight runs

Rangers 2B Ian Kinsler has 13 hits and four stolen bases

Hot pitchers

Diamondbacks closer Brandon Lyon has 14 consecutive scoreless innings

Blue Jays starter Shawn Marcum has given up just two earned runs and has 23 strikeouts in his past 23 1/3 innings (past three starts)

Mets starter John Maine has won his past four starts and has given up an average of 1.5 runs per start over those four starts.

Center fielder Jim Edmonds is headed to the Cubs (http://blogs.suntimes.com/cubs/2008/05/latest_on_edmonds.html#more) Don’t react yet, but keep an eye on him – he could find Wrigley rejuvenating.

Indians starting pitchers have four shutouts in five games (http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/) and have now compiled a string of 43 1/3 innings of scoreless ball.
