(Thursday article, "Remaking Casino Road.") I have had the pleasure of being involved with a similar group in Monroe, unofficially called Destination Alley, to improve an unnamed alley of the downtown area that is also known for drugs, crime and vandalism. It can be a daunting effort to encourage involvement of people and gain their trust, but it's worth it! A group of more than 50 volunteers has been working for about two years to decrease the crime rate, improve the appearance, and increase the viability of businesses in the area. We've had great support from the city of Monroe, the Monroe Police Department, as well as local businesses and residents outside of the alley. But in the end, it's these types of grass-roots organizations that initiate change and see it carried through. Once again, great job to Heidi Happonen and Tyrone McMorris, and keep up the good work!
