Struggling Clement sent down; Reed returns

Posted at 4:26 pm by By Kirby Arnold

After using Jeff Clement as a DH and catcher since they called him up April 30, the Mariners have found a place that probably suits him best right now -- Class AAA Tacoma.

The team optioned the 24-year-old catcher back to the Rainiers after today's game. Clement, who intrigued everyone last September when he batted .375 with two home runs in nine games, wasn't the same hitter this time. He batted .167 and struck out 20 times in 48 at-bats.

It became obvious he needs to go down and play every day, get his stroke and probably his confidence back.

The Mariners won't announce who will replace him on the roster until Tuesday, but a pretty good clue walked into the clubhouse about 4 o'clock this afternoon. Outfielder Jeremy Reed, who batted .349 in 38 games with the Rainiers, arrived with his suitcase and dressed to travel with the Mariners to Detroit.
