Vandalism closes Snohomish school
By Eric Stevick and Jackson Holtz Herald Writers
SNOHOMISH -- Students were sent home from Riverview Elementary School this morning as crews cleaned up a mess left by vandals over the weekend.
Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the break-in.
Video cameras, speakers and money were stolen, said Betty Robertson, acting superintendent of the Snohomish School District.
Someone apparently got into the school and sprayed fire extinguishers all over, tossed things around and made a big mess, said Rebecca Hover, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
Deputies have taken fingerprints and photographs and interviewed several people.
School crews were going room to room to assess the damage this morning. No estimates were immediately available.
District officials also plan to investigate why an alarm system at the school did not detect the break-in, Robertson said.
Many students were contacted before the school day started and stayed home. Others being dropped off at school were sent home with parents. Some students were still in the school’s gym, Robertson said.
