This is it: The final week of the 2007-2008 high school sports season.
As usual, the school year zipped along. There is plenty of excitement left though. For me, the season will end in Pasco, the site of the Class 3A and 4A state track and field championships.
Look for our meet preview in The Herald on Thursday.
The two-day 3A/4A state track meet (Friday and Saturday) is always a dizzying experience. Individual state champions are crowned left and right and it's difficult to make sense of it all, even for someone who's been there a few times.
I'm looking forward to watching several athletes compete one last time. Among them is Mariner senior Marzell Jenkins. To read some previous stories about Jenkins, a talented sprinter, click the following story links:

On Friday I interviewed Jenkins for the first time. He was exhausted after winning the 400-meter dash in meet-record time during the 4A District 1 championship meet at Everett Memorial Stadium. Despite being supremely tired, he answered my questions, in between deep breaths.
Here is one of Jenkins' comments about how it feels to run the 400:
"There could be only a hundred meters left but it feels like a thousand. Your legs start giving up. Your butt starts burning … and you can’t breathe."
Sounds fun, right?
