Area rowers shine at USRowing Northwest Junior Regionals
By Rich Myhre Herald Writer
Boats from Snohomish County rowing clubs fared well over the weekend at the USRowing Northwest Junior Regional Championships on Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, Wash.
The annual regatta, which is a qualifying event for the upcoming USRowing Junior Nationals, included 21 clubs from Washington and Oregon.
The Everett Rowing Association, which trains on the Snohomish River in Everett, finished with 14 victories and finished second or third in six other races.
The Lake Stevens Rowing Club, which trains on Lake Stevens, finished with five first places, four seconds and two thirds.
Though some rowers ended up qualifying for nationals in multiple boats, Everett will be taking three boats and 30 athletes to the national regatta June 13-15 at Cincinnati's Lake Harsha. Representing Everett will be the association's varsity women's eight (second at regionals), varsity men's eight (third), and lightweight men's eight (first).
Everett's varsity women's eight has been to the grand finals at nationals four of the past five years. Everett's lightweight men's eight placed second at nationals a year ago.
In Vancouver, Everett finished with first places in the men's lightweight eight, men's junior varsity eight, men's junior novice eight, men's junior varsity four, men's third varsity four, men's fourth varsity four, men's lightweight four, men's JV lightweight four, men's novice four, men's JV novice four, women's novice eight, women's varsity four, women's third varsity four and women's fourth varsity four.
Everett's rowers "competed very well. They represented the best of the Everett Rowing Association," said interim director Hans Doerr. "We've never sent so many kids down there that had so much success."
Everett had almost 95 rowers competing at regionals, Doerr added, "and every kid on the team except for two came home with a medal (for first, second or third place). ... Everybody was pretty happy. There were a lot of pictures of the kids up there on the victory stand."
Lake Stevens, which competed as a sculling (double oars) club in Vancouver, won the men's varsity four, novice men's singles, women's varsity four, women's novice four and women's junior varsity doubles. The club will be taking four boats with 10 athletes to nationals.
"For our club, it was the best regionals we've ever had," said Brian Wagner, the head coach and varsity women's coach. "It was a pretty incredible regionals for our club. We ended up with six gold medals, which rivals a lot of the big clubs, and we walked away with a host of other medals."
The success, he said, was due to "a lot of hard work. The club is developing a tradition of winning and that kind of carries on even though some of those learner years. ... The team is used to winning, they see it can be done and they have confidence in the people who are helping them do it. They all support each other."
Here are the IDs of the kids in the boat. The coxswain (her head is barely visible in the lower left) is Lexi Ryman, Snohomish. Then from left Mallory Potts, Everett; Shannon Stief, Mukilteo; Caitlin Knox, Snohomish; Paula Welly, Everett.
