Timeout with ... Haley Nemra, Marysville-Pilchuck track and field
Everyone has endured frustrating experiences they prefer to forget. For Haley Nemra, it was the cross-country and track seasons of her junior year.
Following successful freshman and sophomore seasons, last school year she struggled. Nemra said she constantly felt tired and sore. The most annoying part was she didn't know what was wrong.
Her times were slower. Aches and pains were constant yet difficult to pinpoint. People wondered if she lost her passion for running, Nemra said.
"It was really hard because it wasn't me and I was trying to be the top runner and everyone was wondering what's wrong," she said.
Finally, at the end of the 2007 track season she got an answer from her doctor: Nemra was highly anemic. Her severe fatigue was the result of not having enough iron in her diet.
Thanks to a diet change, Nemra is back to her old ways. This week she'll represent M-P at the Class 4A state track and field meet in Pasco.
The senior's past troubles are a distant memory. Said Nemra, "I always tell everyone, 'Last year never happened.'"
Coach's corner
Nemra is one of the most successful runners in M-P team history. She has the school record in the 800-meter run (2 minutes, 15.66 seconds) and ran on the 2006 group that still holds the 1,600 relay school record (3:56.91).
But Nemra contributes more than fast times. "The main thing she brings," M-P track coach Randy Davis said, "is just her attitude. She's just positive and upbeat every day."
Nemra loves to talk, and her "amazing giggle" makes it easy for others to enjoy being around her, Davis said: "People kind of fall in love with her."
San Francisco treat
After considering a few options, Nemra decided to run track and cross country for the University of San Francisco. Nemra said she signed with the Dons last month.
Continuing the legacy
Nemra's favorite track event is the 1,600 relay, also known as the 4-by-400. She said she enjoys the team atmosphere. Every time the Tomahawks win, they sing a special song. It's a cheer Nemra learned when she was a freshman and has passed on to younger teammates. "It's all about tradition with us," she said.
Helping a buddy
Last school year Nemra participated in a mentoring program and was paired with a girl from Pinewood Elementary. Nemra met with the girl once or twice a week for a half-hour at a time.
"It makes their day, so it's kind of cool. They just look up to you," said Nemra.
