Girls tennis Ivana Krommelova of Arlington won the 3A District 1 singles championship, taking three straight matches without losing a game. Boys golf Ricky McDonald of Edmonds-Woodway shot even par 73-71—144 to win the 4A District 1 championship by five strokes. Girls golf Seo Hee Moon of Kamiak shot 71-78—149 to win the 4A District 1 championship by 11 strokes over teammate Rachel Choi. Softball Erin Feeney of Jackson batted 3-for-4 with four RBI and earned the pitching victory in relief in an 8-0 district tournament win over Stanwood and hit a go-ahead home run in a 3-2 win over Cascade. One boy and one girl from each district high school (Cascade, Everett and Jackson) were honored. The awards were created in 2005 "to recognize student-athletes who may not be stars in competition but exhibit greatness in the classroom and in the community," according to a district statement. To be considered students must have a minimum 3.2 grade-point average and participate in a varsity sport. Here are details about the winners, provided by the district: Cascade High School Chris Wilson -- boys track The four-year varsity-team letter winner and current team captain has a 3.75 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. Lezlie Grieser -- girls golf Spent significant time with several service groups. Has a 3.64 GPA and is a member of Honor Society. Everett High School Brent Swezey -- baseball The two-year team captain has a 3.98 GPA and was also an all-conference football player. Maggie Burton -- girls golf Has qualified for four consecutive state golf tournaments. Has a 3.98 GPA, volunteers as a Sunday school teacher and is a student leader for Everett High's Young Life club. Jackson High School Christopher McGee -- baseball Participated in baseball and football all four years of high school, lettering twice in baseball and three times in football. Has a 3.73 GPA and is president of Jackson's math club. Danielle Bowlden -- girls golf A varsity player for two seasons, she has a 3.94 GPA and has taken advanced-placement classes throughout her years at Jackson. Multi-event meet returns to Lake Stevens Some of the state's most well-rounded track and field athletes will have a chance to win $2,000 of scholarship money May 30-31 at Lake Stevens High. For the second straight year the Washington State Combined Events Championships -- also known as the Dennis McDonald Multi-Events Championships -- will take place in Lake Stevens. According to co-meet director Chris Mattingly, this is the first time scholarships will be offered at the competition, which features male and female high-school-age athletes competing in the heptathlon (seven events) and decathlon (10 events). Seniors are encouraged to apply for two $1,000 scholarships, Mattingly said. A selection committee of meet organizers and coaches will award scholarships based on athletic ability, academic achievement and community service, said Mattingly. At least 80 boys and girls are expected to compete, Mattingly said. Brittany Tri of Lake Stevens is among local girls who plan to participate, and Gig Harbor's Bree LeRoy, one of the state's elite hurdlers and jumpers, will be there too. Last year's winners were Olympia's Casey Stevick (boys decathlon), Brittany Aanstad of Lake Stevens (girls heptathlon) and Rachele Kloke of Stanwood (girls decathlon). Camas soccer star receives Gatorade award Brent Richards, a midfielder from Camas High, was named the 2007-08 Gatorade Washington Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Richards, a 5-foot-10 senior, scored 23 goals and tallied eight assists for the Papermakers before the 3A state tournament. Camas, which beat Nathan Hale and Mount Vernon in the first two rounds of the state tourney, plays Lakeside 3 p.m. Friday in the semifinals. Mike Cane, Herald Writer
