3A tennis: Krommelova’s next test

Posted at 3:30 pm by Mike Cane, Herald Writer

21 victories and zero defeats.

That sparkling match record is owned by Arlington tennis player Ivana Krommelova, an exchange student from Slovakia who has seriously dominated opponents this season.

This week Krommelova, a junior, will try to stay unbeaten and win a state title at the Class 3A singles championships in Kennewick. She has lost just three games all season: two in a 6-2, 6-0 regular-season victory over Oak Harbor’s Jennifer Jansen and the other in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph versus Shorecrest’s Belinda Pan.

But things are about to get more difficult for Krommelova, Arlington coach Sean Cunningham said this morning in an e-mail.

“This certainly will be Ivana’s biggest test so far this year. That is the great thing about state. You have exceptional players all around,” Cunningham said.

Krommelova’s opponent in the first round, which starts at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Tri-Cities Court Club, is senior Caitlin Bampton of Kamiakin. Unlike Krommelova, Bampton did not win a district title. But earlier this postseason Bampton eliminated 2007 3A state singles champion Alexis Filliol of West Valley.

Elsewhere in the bracket, more tough opponents lurk, Cunningham said: “Several of the girls in the draw have junior rankings and are definitely club players.”

The two-day 3A girls tennis championships conclude Saturday. For more information about that event as well as other spring sports competitions going on this week, go to www.wiaa.com.
