Explosion ignites in third quarter

Snohomish County survives poor second quarter, rallies to beat road-weary Las Vegas 123-101

MONROE -- Third quarters have not been a strong suit for the Snohomish County Explosion this season.

But, after a particularly poor second period in Saturday night's International Basketball League game against the Las Vegas Stars at Monroe High School, Explosion assistant coach and team owner Nathan Mumm sounded hopeful.

"Well, maybe the second quarter will be our third quarter tonight," Mumm muttered as the team's headed to their locker rooms at halftime with the Explosion trailing 59-56.

It may not work as a regular strategy, but having gotten their 12 worst minutes out of the way early -- and after enduring the jawing wrath of head coach Randy Redwine during the break -- the Explosion came out on fire in what proved to be a pivotal third period. That fire sent them to a 123-101 victory over the road-weary Stars, who were playing their eighth game in nine days.

"I told them (at halftime) if we don't come out and blow these guys out of this game I'm going to make a wholesale change … everybody will be on the (cut or trade) block," Redwine said. "Now, who says we can't beat a team with a winning record?"

In the third quarter's opening six minutes, Donald Watts scored 15 points -- including six on a pair of 3-pointers -- had three rebounds, three assists, two steals and a ferocious blocked shot to lead a 25-9 surge that resulted in an 81-66 lead.

Watts finished with a team-high 25 points and added six assists and four blocked shots.

After not scoring in the first half, center Alex Adediran had 12 points in the third quarter and finished with 19.

Balanced scoring and a dominating 60-39 rebounding advantage ensured the Explosion (10-8) would put a stop to a two-game losing streak.

With starting point guard Jamal Miller unavailable due to a shoulder injury, Greg Hendricks stepped in as the starter and had a game-high 10 assists and seven rebounds. Ryan Skinner split time with Hendricks and contributed six assists and eight points.

Chris Keller and Chris Weakley each made a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 15 and 18 points, respectively. Justin James and Mike Jones had a team-high eight rebounds apiece and combined for 17 points.

The Stars (9-7) were led by 7-footer Trevor Lawrence with 26 points. They nudged to within 90-80 early in the fourth quarter, but lost their legs down the stretch.

"We were beat, but that's no excuse," said Eddie Shelby, who was held six points below his 23 points per game average. "We broke down as a team and came out flat after halftime."
