One week after winning the Class 4A state championship in the event, Brennan took first in the 2008 Brooks Meet of Champions, an annual competition that not only brings together top competitors from all classes in Washington, but Oregon as well. Still, the win may have been Brennan's swan song. That's because the Monroe senior is scheduled to play volleyball at New Mexico State University in the fall, and may not have enough time for her favorite field event. "We'll see. I sure would like to, but I'm going to be pretty busy," she said. "That's why it was nice to get one more meet in. It would be a good way to finish." Brennan's throw of 133 feet, 7 inches was much further than anyone else in attendance at Woolsey Stadium Saturday. Brooke Randall of Eastmont was runner-up with a 122-10. Last week, Brennan won the state 4A meet with a toss of 135 feet, 9 inches. That was six inches better than the best throw from Jenna Walsh of Marysville-Pilchuck. "This meet was definitely a lot like state," Brennan said. "A lot of the throws were similar, so it was good competition." While Washington had Oregon vastly outnumbered in entrants of most events, Brennan was one of just a handful of girls competitors from Snohomish County in attendance. Two of those were in the long jump, where Archbishop Murphy's Sarah Schierman placed second with a leap of 18 feet, 3½ inches and Snohomish's Jessica Yates was third with a 17-4. Rebbeca Rhodes, from Oregon, placed first with an 18-4½. Yates also was third in the triple jump with a 37-21/2, more than a foot short of Olivia Ward from Cleveland High School. Schierman finished well in another event too, taking third in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 45.02. Mariner's Marzell Jenkins continued a torrid May run with two more wins, each of which set stadium records. He won the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.95, just toppling Lakewood's Devon Smith, who had a 49.28. Smith entered the race with a faster personal best than Jenkins. Jenkins also led a 400-meter relay team that broke a stadium record with a time of 42.89. He was joined in that race by Cascade's Julian Willis, Derek Sepe and Lorne Bridgeford. At state, Jenkins was fourth in the 200-meter dash and second in the 400. "I was doing all the events today that I didn't think I did very well on at state," he said. "I wanted to try and get done what I couldn't do at state." Jenkins also ran a leg on a 1,600-meter relay team which finished second. Jenkins ran the anchor leg and managed to improve his team's position by one in the final lap, but came just short of first place at the finish line. Snohomish's Marlin Anderson came up with a second-place finish in the shot put, hurling a best throw of 54 feet, 5 inches. Hazen's Andrey Levkiv was first with a 55-1. Dylan Burnett-Lewis from Lynnwood was third in the javelin with a throw of 182-7.
