Local Briefly: Everett deck collapse causes minor injuries

EVERETT -- Three people were injured Sunday afternoon when a deck collapsed in Everett.

The deck became detached from an older single-family house in the 3800 block of Friday Avenue shortly before 3 p.m.

Several people were on the 8-foot-by-13-foot deck when it collapsed; three suffered minor injuries, Everett Fire Marshal Glen Martinsen said.

The deck apparently separated from the ledger board that held it to the house and slid away, Martinsen said.

He was unsure of the deck's height and had no further information on the people who were injured.

Arson suspected in elementary school fire

Investigators suspect arson is to blame for a fire that caused $5,000 worth of damage to Jefferson Elementary School on Sunday.

The fire started in a garbage bin and spread to the siding of a shed attached to the main school building.

Neighbors reported the fire at 5:50 p.m. and firefighters responded and quickly brought it under control, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1. No one was injured.

"The fire damage was limited to the exterior of the shed -- the siding and some roofing material," she said. "The interior of the school building was not damaged."

The school is located in the 2500 block of Cadet Way,

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire as arson.

Lynnwood: 4 arrested after fight at mall

Four people were arrested Sunday following a fight at the Alderwood mall in Lynnwood. Weapons were involved, but no one was injured, said Lynnwood Police Sgt. Frank Axtman.

The fight broke out shortly before 5 p.m. near the food court.

Three minors and one adult were arrested after leaving the mall, Axtman said.

The mall was not evacuated.

The type of weapons used in the fight and further information about the suspects wasn't available Sunday.
