Dunking in women’s basketball

Sparks dunk on Storm.

That headline in The Herald yesterday caught my attention. Dunks are still rare in women’s basketball but Los Angeles Sparks rookie Candace Parker is changing that perception.

On Tuesday Parker, a 6-foot-4 forward, dunked in L.A.’s WNBA victory against the Seattle Storm. It was the second straight game Parker had a slam.

According to a Los Angeles Times story Parker’s jams are the second and third in WNBA history. Lisa Leslie, who also plays for the Sparks, had the league’s first (and, until Parker came along, only) dunk six years ago.

This got me thinking about dunking in high school girls basketball. I’ve never covered a game where a girl has even attempted a slam, but it happens.

Meet Brittney Griner, a 6-8 post from Houston. The Class of 2009 standout regularly dunks for her Nimitz High School team.

An article on ESPN.com calls her the future of women’s basketball.

I’ve certainly never seen anyone like her. To watch Griner in action click here or search “high school girl dunker” on YouTube.
