Worker dies at Mukilteo City Hall site

MUKILTEO -- A 33-year-old carpenter died Thursday at the construction site of the new Mukilteo City Hall.

His death is under investigation as an industrial accident, Mukilteo police officer Cheol Kang said.

The accident occurred about 10:55 a.m. at the building at the intersection of Harbour Pointe Boulevard and Cyrus Way. A work crew was using a cement truck to pump concrete into the building's second floor. After pumping had stopped, something went wrong and a piece of construction equipment struck the worker, Kang said.

The man, whose name and hometown were not released, died at the scene.

"At this time, the incident appears to have been an industrial accident," Kang said. "However, this case is still under investigation."

The man was an employee of Sierra Construction Co. Inc., the general contractor for the Mukilteo City Hall project, city spokeswoman Crystn McArthur said.

Officials from Sierra Construction Co., which has offices in Woodinville and Portland, Ore., could not be reached for comment.

Further information about the man who died was unavailable Thursday. Work at the site was stopped after the accident. Some family members came to the construction site, and requested privacy from the media.

The state Department of Labor and Industries is investigating, department spokeswoman Cheryl Moore said.

Mukilteo Mayor Joe Marine said he drove to the City Hall site Thursday after hearing about the accident. He expects that work at the building will resume Monday.

Construction of the new $6.9 million City Hall started this spring and is expected to be finished by early 2009.

The building is designed to be one of the most environmentally-friendly public buildings in Snohomish County.

"This is a horrible situation that you never want to see happen," Marine said.
