Fine week for books, bings, bugs and more

Stephen King lovers, get on your marks, get set, go.

Tomorrow, as in Saturday.

Someone donated a bunch of hardcover Stephen King novels for a Books and Bake Sale at the Camano Island Library.

Manager David Menard said there's a great selection of books for sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 848 N. Sunrise Blvd.

"I've been pushing carts back and forth," Menard said.

He knows the bake sale is in good hands: Organizers say they've run plenty of sweets sales. So plan on getting a cookie or slice of pie while shopping to benefit good deeds done by Camano Island Library Friends.

There are three reasons to buy bing and Rainier cherries in Oak Harbor: The quality is high, the prices are right and each purchase funds a worthy cause.

Brenda Cheaqui with the Oak Harbor Lions Club said the cherries come from East Wenatchee and go on sale today.

Look for the Lions' yellow trailer in the parking lot of Rite Aid, 31645 Highway 20, Oak Harbor.

"We usually have three sales per summer," Cheaqui says. "The next one, probably in July, usually has more bings but no Rainiers, and peaches and nectarines."

The last sale in August features vegetables, including peppers, jalapenos, tomatoes and onions, all from Eastern Washington.

Get cherries from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily while they last.

As drivers dodge firefighters, drop money in the bucket.

The fundraiser Fill the Boot for MDA! is today and Saturday at the intersection of Grove Street and State Avenue in Marysville.

Firefighters will offer drivers the boot during red lights to benefit muscular dystrophy.

Money collected between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. both days goes to treatment, care, diagnosis, equipment and other services to help people with neuromuscular diseases.

How do the firefighters avoid cars in the intersection?

"Very carefully," said Stephanie Price, public information officer for the Marysville Fire District.

Lips are sealed at the Granite Falls Library.

It's more than just respecting a quiet atmosphere, it's about a surprise guest who is dropping by at 1 p.m. Monday at 815 E. Galena St.

It's a free program about bugs.

Schoolchildren may test their knowledge of some really "buzzarre" bugs, said children's liaison Linnea Epstein.

Find crossword puzzles and trivia and look out for walking sticks, chiggers and ticks.

So what's the big critter secret?

"A special bug is making an appearance," Epstein said. "The surprise bug has requested total anonymity until it is revealed on Monday."

Fine. Be that way.

Secrecy bugs me.

Fun Fact: At least once a week, Bud Bergdahl of Stanwood eats at Philly Deli in Stanwood.

"It's the best-kept secret in Snohomish County," Bergdahl said. "I recommend this place wholeheartedly."

He says they make the best Philly cheese steak, meatball and fresh turkey sandwiches.

He swears he isn't the owner, just a faithful customer who wants to see the place get the kudos it deserves.
