Bellingham, Vancouver reach title game
By Bob Mortenson Herald Writer
MONROE -- It's pretty clear why the Bellingham Slam came into the International Basketball League's Western Conference playoffs as the No. 1 seed.
The West Division-champion Slam used a second-quarter blitz to hammer the leg-weary Edmonton Chill into a 25-point halftime hole and breezed to a 129-101 victory in a semifinal game Saturday night at Monroe High School.
Bellingham (17-4) advanced to today's championship game against Vancouver (18-6).
Tipoff is 2:30 p.m.
Brandon Hartley (five assists) and Tyler Amaya (nine rebounds) paced Bellingham with 24 points each. Ryan Diggs (six assists) and Paul Hafford (six rebounds) added 21 points apiece for the Slam, who led 101-57 late in the third quarter.
"We shared the ball real well and shot good inside-out," Bellingham coach Rob Ridnour said. "We had good energy on the defensive end and rotated well."
Edmonton (13-9), playing its third game in three nights -- including a 127-124 victory over Portland in Friday's quarterfinals -- was led by Rashaun Broadus (24 points, 11 rebounds) and Lee Scruggs (20 points, eight rebounds).

Vancouver 132, Central Oregon 114: Eight Volcanoes scored in double figures as Vancouver rolled into today's championship final opposite Bellingham. Vancouver (18-6) built a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter and was led by guard Kevin Tyner, who narrowly missed a triple-double (22 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds). The Volcanoes' Shawn Malloy had a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with 16 points and three blocked shots.
After shooting 14-for-25 on 3-point shots in its upset victory over Snohomish County on Friday, Central Oregon (9-17) went cold against the Volcanoes with a 7-for-26 effort beyond the arc. The Hotshots had just seven players available and were led by Cliff White, who scored a game-high 32 points and played 47 minutes. Jadae Bonds added 20 points and 10 rebounds.
