The Greater Marysville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce is mourning the death of past chamber chairman of the board Ian Millikan. His leadership played a key role in the rebuilding the chamber and he served as its first legal counsel, advising and protecting the organization as it moved into new arenas of legislative advocacy. "His strength, compassion and fairness on behalf of those he did battle for was truly inspirational. With his passing, his family, friends and the entire community have suffered a great loss," said Caldie Rogers, president and CEO of the chamber.

Jack Fellows of Lake Stevens won two first-place awards for his oil painting "Corsair" by the American Society of Aviation Artists. Fellows' work is among those on display at the Museum of Flight through Sept. 14. His winning painting will be published in Aviation Week's issue in December. To see more of Fellows' work, go to www.jackfellows.com.

Denney Austin will be installed as Bethany of the Northwest's chief executive officer during a ceremony July 17. A native of Spokane and a graduate of the University of Washington, Austin previously worked for Martha & Mary Lutheran Services in Poulsbo for nine years. Austin often brings his therapy dog, Hondah, to work to hobnob with the residents and staff at Bethany in Everett.

Greg Rielly of Mortgage Advisory Group has been named vice president of the board of the Snohomish County Museum of History. David Sato of First Heritage Bank is treasurer. New trustees include Sandra Alder of Capital Architects and Larry Baker of Pregaid Legal Services.

Workshops, seminars

The Everett office of the Washington State Department of Revenue will host a free workshop for new and small-business owners from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. July 8 at the Everett Public Library, 2707 Hoyt Ave., Everett. Participants will learn about state excise taxes, reporting classifications, deductions, tax incentives, sales tax collection and record-keeping requirements. All receive a workbook and helpful reference guide to Department of Revenue rules and regulations. To register, visit the Department of Revenue Web site at www.dor.wa.gov, or call 425-356-4800. Space is limited. A complete schedule of statewide workshops and a short streaming video version of the workshop in English and Spanish are available at www.dor.wa.gov.

Making critical steps to change your business is the topic of a seminar offered from 7:30 to 9 a.m. July 8 at United Way of Snohomish County, 3120 McDougall Ave., Suite 200, Everett. Offered by Brad Worthley, the seminar is part of the Everett Area Chamber of Commerce's Empower Youniversity series. Cost is $15 for chamber members and $45 for nonmembers. Call 425-257-3222 to register.

Business news

Injured or disabled workers receiving Washington workers' compensation will receive a cost-of-living increase of 5.018 percent starting on Tuesday. The payments are recalculated each year to reflect the change in the state's average wage from the previous calendar year.

Washington state ranked 28th nationally in taxes paid relative to income in 2006, the state Department of Revenue reported. Washingtonians paid an average of 11.2 percent of their personal income in state and local taxes, according to Census Bureau information.

Honors

Verathon of Bothell has been named one of the state's "Best Companies To Work For" for the second consecutive year by Washington CEO Magazine. Verathon was ranked as the fourth best company in the medium-sized company category, for companies with 100 to 499 employees. Verathon was selected as one of only 22 companies in that size category included in the overall Top 100. More than 54 medium-sized companies entered overall, and more than 300 small, medium and large companies in total were nominated for the top 100.
