Quick, grab your headsets

'Hands-free' phone law takes effect just after midnight

After blogging last week about the new "phoning while driving" law that takes effect Tuesday, I went home and my wife and I found the cheap but effective "wired" headset that works with our cellphone. We might still splurge on a Bluetooth device, but for now, at least we're ready for the new law.

The hardest part, I think will be remembering not to pick up the phone, dial it and hold it up to my head while driving. It's an almost subconscious habit.

Which got me thinking. So, while I was out and about this weekend -- wishing my car had air conditioning, even if I would use it only two or three times a year -- I paid attention to the drivers around me. I was pleasantly surprised to see many with shiny Bluetooth devices on their ears, but many, MANY more people were chatting away with their phones attached to their ears -- the action that becomes illegal as of tomorrow. Most doing this, by the way, were younger drivers.

(By the way, in case you missed it, The Herald had a story today that detailed how a similar hands-free law has worked, or hasn't, in New Jersey.)

Anyway, how many people are ready for the new law? I want to know.
