The more and more I think about it, the more I think “Flight of the Conchords” soundtrack is among the best CDs to come out this year.
Oh, sure, it’s not an "important" CD. I mean, it’s the soundtrack to a TV series, right? It certainly didn’t come with the type of hype that was behind Lil Wayne's latest. It lacked an iPod commercial, also. But in it’s way, its funnier than Weezy and just as catchy as Coldplay.
Anyway, I say all this to lead into our first video. Dig it:
Flight of the Conchords — “Ladies of the World” — Official video
This song appeared in the series, but, like many songs, was treated to a better recording for the show’s soundtrack. With that better recording comes a slicker video. Fans of the deadpan group will find plenty to enjoy. It's all about the rollerskates, the rhythm of the movement, the feel of the wheel.
Neil Young — “A Day in the Life” cover — Wobbly video
Remember when MTV started popularizing quick cuts? How that music video junk seeped into movies? Do you think YouTube will popularize wobbly video like this – the type of video that sort of sucks? You may say, oh, that’s nonsense, but consider “Cloverfield.” I'm telling you, wobbly video is the new quick cut. But I digress, the sound on this live recording is solid, as Young covers a Beatles classic.
Vampire Weekend — “Oxford Comma” — Official video
I really like Vampire Weekend, don’t get me wrong, but, to me, the video for its latest seems like a stone cold rip off of Wes Anderson’s American Express commercial. Now, don’t get me wrong again, I really enjoy Wes Anderson and American Express commercials. But I mean, c’mon. It’s got the same look, right down to the white suits.
