Sonics settlement: All that remains is sadness

Wrote something about the Sonics settlement for Thursday. Now that I've had time to analyze my feelings, I guess the overriding emotion is sadness. I was 10 when the Sonics were born and I remember listening to games right off.

I remember Bob Rule and Tom Meschery and Art Harris. They were crummy, but it was still cool to watch them and know that an NBA team was so close. We lived 2 hours away, so it was a big deal when we'd go and see a game. Good times.

I guess I have a little anger in me as well because I've been trying to identify someone to blame. Obviously, there are many, but I can't forget our elected officials, who pretty much ushered the team out the door. I find Clay Bennett to be a reprehensible liar, but he did what he could to take away the team and he got away with it. I have zero respect for David Stern because this was a personal vendetta for him against the State Legislature, which laughed him out of the chambers when he wanted to talk financing for a new arena. Arrogant jerkoid.

I do think the NBA will grant Seattle another franchise. I hope fans will receive it with the same support they did with the Sonics. Seattle is a proven NBA market. The only reason the Sonics left is because of incomprehensible bungling by those in charge.

With any luck, they'll all be out of the picture when the new team comes around.
