Going to the dogs

Posted at 12:01 am by Mark Carlson, Herald staff

She was called the "Queen of Mean" back in the 1980s, but Leona Helmsley was pretty darn nice to dogs. The hotel owner and real estate investor, who died last year, reportedly decreed that her entire fortune -- all $8 billion of it -- go to the caring of canines.

Let's take a sniff at what that kind of dough could buy:

348 million 18-pound sacks of Purina One Lamb & Rice formula kibble. More than 12,500 semi-trucks would be needed to haul the load home.

222 million copies of "Dog Whisperer With Cesar Millan, The Complete First Season" on DVD. The entire world could learn that neck poke thing he does.

1.1 billion packages of "freshly scented" dog scoop bags. That's enough to pick up more than 40 billion excréments de chiens -- but not quite sufficient to clean up the sidewalks of Paris, alas.

Microsoft reportedly wants to buy Yahoo's online search operations with the help of News Corp. and Time Warner. If the deal goes through, Rupert Murdoch gets the exclamation point.
