Boeing boosted by increased jet deliveries in 2nd quarter

EVERETT -- The Boeing Co. is on track to meet its 2008 jet deliveries goal after boosting the number of aircraft it handed over to customers in the second quarter.

The Chicago-based aerospace company increased its airplane deliveries by about 11 percent in the second quarter over the same period last year, according to figures Boeing released Thursday. Boeing delivered 126 aircraft in the past three months, bringing its mid-year delivery total to 241. That puts Boeing in line to meet its goal of handing over 475 to 480 aircraft in 2008.

Boeing also updated its year-to-date orders total Thursday, adding 16 commercial airplane orders for the last week. The company has won 475 net orders during the first half of the year.

An order for three new 777s from Air France was noted on Boeing's orders and deliveries Web site on Thursday. The company also added an order for 13 737s and attributed it to an unidentified customer.

Rival jet maker Airbus had won 435 net orders at the end of May. The European company updates its orders total monthly and is expected to report its June numbers soon. Airbus had delivered 201 airplanes at the end of May.

Boeing ramped up deliveries of its single-aisle 737 in the second quarter, delivering 100 of the Renton-built jets. It delivered 87 737s in the first quarter for a year-to-date total of 187. Boeing has a backlog of 2,180 unfilled orders for its 737, as of June 30.

Boeing delivered five 747s and three 767s over the last three months.

The company also handed over 18 of its Everett-built 777 jets. That's three fewer than the 21 Boeing delivered in the first quarter. However, workers in Everett assembled the first 777 Freighter, rolling the cargo plane out in May. The company expects to begin flight tests for the 777 Freighter next week.

Boeing's shares closed up 57 cents at $64.47 after Thursday's shortened session. The company's stock has dropped more than $40 since its 52-week high of $107.83 last July.
