Red Cross offers tips for burns

The Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross offers the burn tips for fireworks or barbecue accidents:

Stop the burning. Put out the flames or remove the victim from the source of the burn.

Critical burns need immediate medical attention. Call 911 if a burn victim is having difficulty breathing; more than one part of the body is burned; burns are on the head, neck, hands, feet or genitals; a child or an elderly person has been burned; or chemicals, electricity or explosions have caused burns.

Cool the burn. Use large amounts of water to cool the burned area. Do not use ice or ice water other than on small superficial burns; ice causes loss of body heat. Use whatever resources are available -- tub, shower or garden hose.

Cover the burn. Use dry, sterile dressings or a clean cloth to cover a burn. Loosely bandage them in place.

For minor burns and burns with open blisters that do not require medical care, wash the areas with soap and water. Keep it clean. Put on an antibiotic ointment. Watch for signs of infection.

Corrections

The correct New York Times Crossword Puzzle for July 3 appears today on Page B2. The wrong puzzle was printed Thursday on Page D5. Today's New York Times Crossword Puzzle is on Page C7. Also on Thursday, we published an incorrect TV schedule for the day. We're sorry for the foul-up and the inconvenience for our readers.

Katie Davidson and Jason Frank of Arlington are engaged to marry on July 12. Their Love Story, which appeared on Page B4 Thursday, had Davidson's last name wrong.
