Tragic loss for all who knew Dan Sargent

The Herald lost a valuable member of its sports staff on Tuesday when Dan Sargent died after suffering an allergic reaction.

Sargent, 30, worked as a clerk in the sports department for six of the past seven years, taking a year and a half off to complete his college degree at the University of Montana.

"Everybody in our department is in shock," sports editor Kevin Brown said. "Everyone liked and respected Dan. You can't imagine how much he will be missed."

Sargent was the sports department's resident expert on local soccer.

"Any soccer questions we had, Dan was the guy with the answers," Brown said. "He had sources everywhere."

Sargent, who was allergic to peanuts, suffered a violent reaction to a cookie he ate at a picnic on Sunday, his sister Pennie Sargent said. He was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was pronounced dead Tuesday night, his sister said.

The family said a memorial service will be held later this month.
