Ichiro is lone M's All-Star
By Kirby Arnold, Herald Writer
SEATTLE -- Seattle Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki, voted into the American League All-Star starting lineup for the seventh time, is looking forward to a final game in Yankee Stadium.
This is the last year of the ballpark before a new one opens next door, and Suzuki said he didn't fully enjoy the Yankee Stadium experience in the Mariners' last game there in May.
"I was extremely tired that day and I didn't practice defense," he said. "I was kind of regretting that my last game in Yankee Stadium I didn't get to whole-heartedly practice like I usually do. I'm glad I get the opportunity to do that this time."
This game, July 15, will give Suzuki a different Yankee Stadium experience because he'll be part of the home team.
"Usually I go there as the opponent and I usually get booed by the fans," he said. "But this time I'm not going there as the opponent, so I guess part of me in a way is disappointed that I won't get to enjoy getting booed."
Suzuki finished third in fan voting among outfielders with 2,012,912 votes, behind Texas' Josh Hamilton (3,708,709) and Boston's Manny Ramirez (3,428,577).
Suzuki is the only Mariner to make the team.
"The way our team has performed this year, it's hard for many players to be selected," he said.
This will be Suzuki's eighth straight All-Star appearance.
