Community Roundup: Stief named to U.S. junior rowing team
Shannon Stief, a senior-to-be at Mukilteo's Kamiak High School, has been named to the United States junior national team for the 2008 World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships, July 22-27 in Linz/Ottensheim, Austria.
Stief earned her place at the junior women's pair world championship trials last week at Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. She will be competing at the world championships with Mary Maginnis of Maple Glen, Pa. Both are first-time junior national team members.
During the school year, Stief trains with the Everett Rowing Association on the Snohomish River in Everett. This is the seventh straight year the Everett Rowing Association has sent a junior woman to a summer international rowing event.
"This is setting her up for being looked at by different colleges," said Pasha Spencer, the Everett Rowing Association's new director. "She is going to be sought after after having this experience."
Junior national team trials were held June 24-26 for the men's single sculls, women's single sculls, men's pair, men's double sculls, women's double sculls and men's quadruple sculls. The remaining crews will be announced next week.

The event, billed as the largest 3-on-3 street basketball tournament in the world, drew an estimated 6,000 teams and 24,000 players to downtown Spokane June 28-29.
Winning their respective brackets were the Floor Burns and Sudden Trouble.
The Floor Burns, a group of eighth-graders from Lake Stevens, made it to the final four of their bracket before losing, then advanced to the championship game with an overtime victory. The Floor Burns then avenged themselves on the team that had beaten them earlier to win the bracket.
The players for the Floor Burns were Tanner Hanson, Brice Dodge, Jared Rahn and Keith Acfalle. They were coached by Dale Rahn.
Made up of seventh-grade boys from Arlington, Sudden Trouble won five straight games en route to the championshiop, needing the full 25-minute period just once. Playing for Sudden Trouble were Bradey Brummel, Teven Barraza, Noah Jones and Kaleb Bryson.
